Ở set một và set ba, Sinner chỉ cần một game thắng đỡ bóng để tạo ra tỷ số 6-3. Zverev chỉ chơi tốt trong set hai, khi cứu hai break-point đầu set rồi giữ chắc game giao, kéo đối thủ vào tie-break. Ở loạt đấu cân não, Zverev dẫn trước nhưng không giữ được lợi thế, thua ngược 4-7.
Sau trận, Sinner gửi lời cảm ơn đến đội ngũ, đặc biệt là HLV Darren Cahill – người sẽ chỉ gắn bó với anh đến hết năm nay. Trong Kỷ nguyên Mở, chỉ tám người toàn thắng cả ba trận chung kết Grand Slam đầu sự nghiệp và Sinner là một trong số đó. Danh hiệu tại Melbourne hôm 26/1 giúp Sinner chỉ còn kém kình địch cùng thời Carlos Alcaraz một Grand Slam. Tay vợt 23 tuổi trở thành người Italy đầu tiên cán mốc ba Grand Slam, và là người đầu tiên bảo vệ danh hiệu tại nơi anh giành major đầu tiên, từ sau Rafael Nadal tại Roland Garros 2006.
“Bảo vệ danh hiệu luôn là điều có ý nghĩa lớn”, Sinner nói sau trận chung kết. “Bạn phải vượt qua áp lực lớn hơn các giải đấu khác. Tôi khởi đầu trận đấu với cảm giác tốt trong mọi cú quả, đặc biệt là giao bóng. Tôi không dự giải khởi đầu nào trước khi đến Melbourne, nhưng trong tâm trí, tôi luôn chuẩn bị cho những trận đấu khó khăn nhất”.
Zverev thì thua cả ba trận chung kết Grand Slam. Ở set đầu, anh có lúc phản ứng với trọng tài về vấn đề ở dây vợt. Nhưng có lẽ đó là đỉnh điểm của sự thất vọng đến từ tay vợt 27 tuổi, trong trận chung kết Grand Slam mà anh cảm thấy bất lực nhất từ đầu sự nghiệp.
