Ở phút 30 trận lượt về chung kết ASEAN Cup 2024 tối 5-1, tiền đạo Nguyễn Xuân Son dính chấn thương nặng trong một pha đi bóng tốc độ và cố gắng tạt bóng vào trung lộ.
Sau nỗ lực hết mình này, Xuân Son không may dính chấn thương khi tiếp đất. Anh nằm sân đầy đau đớn và được đội ngũ y tế đưa lên xe cấp cứu đến ngay bệnh viện.
Tại bệnh viện, các bác sĩ chẩn đoán Xuân Son bị gãy 2 xương ống chân (xương mác và xương chày).
Chấn thương của Nguyễn Xuân Son khá giống với trường hợp của tiền vệ Đỗ Hùng Dũng trước đây và khả năng cao cần ít nhất 8 tháng mới có thể quay trở lại sân cỏ.

Ngay sau khi trận chung kết lượt về kết thúc, lãnh đạo Liên đoàn Bóng đá Việt Nam (VFF) đã tới bệnh viện thăm hỏi và kiểm tra tình hình chấn thương của cầu thủ Nguyễn Xuân Son.
Sau khi thảo luận cùng các bác sĩ, VFF quyết định đưa Nguyễn Xuân Son về Việt Nam chữa trị tại Bệnh viện Vinmec theo chương trình hợp tác giữa hai bên.
Cùng thời điểm, bên phía CLB Nam Định cũng phát đi thông điệp từ ông bầu Nguyễn Văn Thiện: “Bằng mọi cách, dùng điều kiện điều trị tốt nhất để chữa trị cho Son, để bạn sớm trở lại cống hiến cho đội tuyển Việt Nam”.
Sau 5 trận ra sân tại ASEAN Cup 2024, Xuân Son ghi được 7 bàn thắng cùng 2 đường kiến tạo, giành danh hiệu Vua phá lưới và Cầu thủ xuất sắc nhất giải.
Dự kiến có diễu hành rước cúp vô địch ASEAN Cup 2024
Sau khi có lần thứ 3 vô địch Đông Nam Á (2008, 2018 và 2024), đội tuyển Việt Nam sẽ về nước trên chuyến bay VN610 dự kiến cất cánh lúc 12h20 ngày 6-1 tại sân bay Suvarnabhumi (Bangkok) và hạ cánh lúc 14h45 tại sân bay Nội Bài (Hà Nội).
Chương trình đón đội tuyển Việt Nam sẽ do Cục Thể dục thể thao chủ trì và dự kiến sẽ có diễu hành rước cúp vô địch ASEAN Cup 2024.
