Để tăng cường sức trẻ và sự cơ động, HLV Koeman bắt đầu thay người từ phút 74. Hai cầu thủ vào thay cùng sinh năm 1999, Francisco Trincao và Riqui Puig đều đóng góp tích cực vào chiến thắng. Phút 89, sau quả tạt cánh phải của De Jong, Puig băng vào đúng tầm đánh đầu ấn định tỷ số 2-0.
Trận thắng trên sân Elche giúp Barca đạt 37 điểm sau 19 vòng, nhờ đó trở lại thứ ba với một điểm nhiều hơn Sevilla. Real Madrid vẫn đang xếp thứ hai với 40 điểm. Atletico dẫn đầu với 44 điểm, đồng thời nắm lợi thế chơi ít hơn hai trận so với ba đội còn lại trong Top 4.
