Hơn 10 phút đầu không có điểm nhấn báo hiệu trận cầu chặt chẽ tới từ hai đội. Arsenal cầm bóng nhiều hơn nhưng không xuyên thủng được hàng thủ Crystal Palace. Đến phút 20, trận đấu mới chứng kiến pha dứt điểm hướng khung thành đầu tiên, khi Aubameyang sút căng nhưng đúng vị trí thủ môn Guaita. Kể từ đó, đội khách như bừng tỉnh và dội ngược sức ép trở lại Arsenal.
Cơ hội đáng chú ý nhất hiệp một thuộc về Crystal Palace ở phút 39. Tiền vệ Eberechi Eze tạt bóng để Tomkins bật cao hơn Rob Holding, đánh đầu trúng xà ngang. Ba phút sau, hậu vệ Tyrick Mitchell đột phá bên trái rồi tạt cho Benteke đánh đầu về góc xa. Thủ môn Leno phải bay người, với hết tầm tay mới đẩy được bóng ra.

Chủ nhà dùng nhiều phương án tấn công nhưng đều bị ngăn chặn. Đội khách cũng có nhiều tình huống phản công, nhưng thường bị Benteke bỏ lỡ.
Arsenal cầm bóng tới 67% thời lượng, nhưng dứt điểm ít hơn một pha. Việc Tierney nghỉ thi đấu vì quá tải khiến đoàn quân của Arteta mất phương án tấn công hiệu quả bên cánh trái. Họ vẫn đứng ở vị trí 11 với 24 điểm sau 18 trận, trước khi tiếp Newcastle ở vòng 19 Ngoại hạng Anh tối thứ Hai 18/1.
