Theo trang Variety, đạo diễn phim Little Mermaid (Nàng tiên cá) phiên bản người thật đóng (live-action) đã mời nữ diễn viên, ca sĩ da màu 19 tuổi Halle Bailey của nhóm nhạc R&B Chloe x Halle, vào vai nàng tiên cá trong bộ phim chuyển thể từ truyện cổ tích Andersen.
Các nguồn tin nội bộ cho biết đạo diễn Rob Marshall đã mất vài tháng qua để gặp gỡ các tài năng, tuy nhiên ngay từ đầu nữ ca sĩ Bailey đã nổi lên như một ứng cử viên phù hợp nhất.
Trong thông báo về quyết định lựa chọn Bailey, đạo diễn Marshall cho biết: “Sau quá trình nỗ lực tìm kiếm, rõ ràng cô Halle đã có được sự kết hợp hiếm hoi của tinh thần, trái tim, tuổi trẻ, sự ngây thơ, chắc chắn, cộng thêm một giọng hát tuyệt vời – tất cả những phẩm chất nội tại cần thiết để vào vai diễn nổi tiếng này”.
Phim Nàng tiên cá bản live-action sẽ kết hợp sử dụng các bài hát nguyên gốc từng sử dụng trong bộ phim hoạt hình cùng tên đình đám năm 1989.
Nó cũng sẽ có thêm các giai điệu mới do hai nhạc sĩ Alan Menken và Lin-Manuel Miranda viết. Trong bộ phim hoạt hình gốc, nhạc sĩ Menken đã viết các bài hát Under the Sea, Part of Your World và Kiss the Girl.
Với việc được chọn vào vai nàng tiên cá Ariel, đây là lần đầu tiên ca sĩ Bailey tham gia một bộ phim truyện kể từ sau khi thành lập nhóm nhạc Chloe x Halle với chị gái Chloe năm 2015.
Theo tạp chí Vox, tạo hình của nhân vật nàng tiên cá trong phim hoạt hình ra mắt năm 1989 với mắt to, mũi nhỏ đã trở thành khuôn mẫu cho hàng loạt các nhân vật hoạt hình nữ của Disney trong 30 năm qua.
