Ngày 14/5, ông Lê Nguyễn Hoàng Anh Duy – Giám đốc dự án điện năng lượng mặt trời tại xã An Hảo, huyện Tịnh Biên, An Giang cho biết, hai tháng trước, trong lúc san ủi mặt bằng rậm rạp dưới chân núi Cấm, các công nhân đã phát hiện cặp rắn hổ mây lớn, nên dùng bao bố và lưới vây bắt.
Mỗi con rắn nặng 30 kg, dài 6-7 m. Chúng sau đó được đưa về nuôi tại một khu du lịch ở đồi Tức Dụp, xã An Tức, huyện Tri Tôn.
“Mấy tháng qua, việc các công nhân bắt được rắn hổ mây là thường xuyên, có thể lên đến 100 con, nhưng trọng lượng thường khoảng 1-3 kg”, ông Duy nói.

Chiều cùng ngày, ông Lý Vĩnh Định – Hạt trưởng kiểm lâm huyện Tri Tôn cho biết, đã cử lực lượng xuống khu du lịch kiểm tra, xác minh cặp rắn đang được nuôi nhốt nguồn gốc từ đâu để có hướng xử lý.
Theo ông Định, rắn hổ mây thuộc nhóm 1B. Đây nhóm động vật có nguy cơ tuyệt chủng cao, nghiêm cấm khai thác, sử dụng vì mục đích thương mại.
Rắn hổ mây hay rắn hổ mang chúa (tên khoa học Ophiophagus hannah) là loài rắn thuộc họ Elapidae (họ Rắn hổ) phân bố chủ yếu trong các vùng rừng nhiệt đới trải dài từ Ấn Độ đến Đông Nam Á. Đây là loài rắn độc dài nhất thế giới, với chiều dài tối đa ghi nhận được trong tự nhiên là khoảng 7 m.
Núi Cấm còn được gọi là Núi Ông Cấm hay Thiên Cấm sơn, là một trong 7 ngọn núi ở An Giang. Núi Cấm cao 705 m, cao nhất Đồng Bằng Sông Cửu Long. Người dân địa phương cho biết, vùng núi Cấm ngày xưa cây cối tốt tươi, có rất nhiều hươu, nai, hổ, báo…, đặc biệt là rắn hổ mang chúa.
